Drop Down Days and sessions:
Year 7
Pupils are invited to a “Freshers Fair” which demonstrates the different clubs and societies they could join outside their academic curriculum.
Race to the Line
The RTTL Challenge is a journey that shapes young minds into future innovators, leaders, and collaborative thinkers.
The RTTL Challenge is specifically designed to engage Year 7 students in a thrilling educational experience that balances the rigors of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with crucial life skills. Through this challenge, students are not only introduced to fundamental scientific principles but are also immersed in an environment that fosters substantial personal and emotional growth.
Year 8
Students take part in“Learn to Earn”- a day of activities which asks them to plan future ownership of homes, cars and lifestyle. They then select a work role complete with salary and employment conditions and are asked to compare their job with others and then budget for their lifestyle based on the salary given. Most students gain a critical insight into family finances through these activities and this often creates lively discussion at home.
They are given an adult job role complete with salary and realistic conditions and are then asked to budget against the earnings of that role. In some cases this may require an adjustment to their proposed lifestyle! Pupils have an opportunity to compare aspects of different work roles and part of the day involves working in teams to win a quiz.
The outcome of the day should be to create a positive attitude towards the future and an understanding that they will have to manage and plan for the lifestyle that they want to achieve. The learning from this day is reinforced by a series of further activities that can be undertaken in tutor time which begin to examine other elements such as time management and diversity.
Year 9
Students have an information session which introduces them to UNIFROG which is an interactive programme including questionnaires and a data-base of different careers information.
Students can find out which career areas are suggested to them depending on the results of the quiz and follow these up to find out more
The student action plan created is printed or saved for future use and added to with supplementary questionnaires.
The programme also suggests suitable GCSE and Post 16 Courses that will be of interest to students following a particular career path.
Two Parents evenings are held in January to inform pupils and parents of the options available to them at Key Stage 4 and update them of pupil progress so that appropriate choices can be made.
Individual guidance is available to help pupils with their choice of options, which for some may include Vocational courses or a more individual timetable alongside the traditional range of GCSE's.
Year 10
In Year 10 we set aside time off timetable where the emphasis is placed on preparation for the World of Work and Post-16 choices as all pupils take part in two days of intensive "Careers Input" and an Enterprise Project.
The first two days of this series includes workshops on Understanding Post-16 Options, Writing a Personal Statement, Interview Skills and the opportunity to have a Mock Interview.
Students are also able to attend one of several advanced level classes to give them an opportunity to experience the change of pace and the choice of attending at least four from 40 different workshops delivered by Colleges, Training Organisations and a range of Career themed speakers.
On the second of the two specialist careers days we finish the week with a Post-16 Event attended by local colleges, Training Providers and Employers. Year 9 and 10 Students and parents are able to visit the event.
This provides:
- An opportunity to visit representatives from different colleges and training organisations on-site at The Romsey School.
- Chance to ask questions about courses and types of training on offer.
- Presentations on “Post-16 Options” and Modern Apprenticeships.
Enterprise Project
Year 11
The focus moves to supporting completion of individual plans to ensure smooth transition onto the next steps, pupils are given encouragement to consider their future choices in more detail and prepare for completing applications before Christmas.
A range of additional career information and guidance activities are delivered in tutor time to reinforce appropriate understanding of these issues.
- Individual Career Interviews.
- Information on events being run by Colleges, Employers and Training Providers.
- 1:1 support and tracking until every pupil has made an informed decision about their next step and completed the application process.
Hand-outs provided give details of open evening dates and events so that they are then able to make fully informed decisions about their next step. As the autumn term progresses several local colleges begin interviewing early applicants and some arrange interviews on the school site.
National Careers and Apprenticeship weeks
Each spring the school get involved with National Careers and Apprenticeship weeks through cross curricular activities.
